Telling the Truth – Maybe? Acts 16:16-18 (NIV) 16 Once when we were going to the place of prayer, we were met by a slave girl who had a spirit by which she predicted the future. She earned a great deal of money for her owners by fortune-telling. 17 This girl followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, "These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved." 18 She kept this up for many days. Finally Paul became so troubled that he turned around and said to the spirit, "In the name of Jesus Christ I command you to come out of her!" At that moment the spirit left her. How many of us just love it when our children help us tell others what we’ve said. Like I didn’t really like what mommy was wearing today. So they go help you by explaining to mommy you didn’t like what she was wearing that day. What other conversations we as parents or adults have that children or others over hear and they share those with the people you were just talking about. It’s not nice is it – to us it might seem down right mean. Why? Weren’t they just sharing the truth? As we look at theses verses today I’d like us to see the girl was gifted in fortune telling. Wouldn’t that be nice? My wife and I have seen so many of those types of businesses go out – you often wonder – did they know it was coming? If so why did they even open their doors. It was amazing for this slave girl to know exactly who Paul and Silas were. She knew they were from God. She also knew they were there to share the good news about how to be saved, so why in the world would Paul cast out that demon? First off how many demons have you ever heard about that was a good demon? Demons I can’t remember ever being put in a good light. So was this a bad demon though? He was only telling the truth, but was the correct way to tell the truth? Sometimes in our lives each of us can have the truth – about life, about others, about jobs, about church, about just about anything….we can possess the truth, but how do we deliver the truth. I now only feel we can speak the truth wrong, but we can also live out the truth wrong….well maybe not wrong, but not according to the word of God. With that being said – let us look at how this lady was professing the truth. Was she professing the truth as it was a great thing or was it more of a distraction? I love to hear wonderful, likeable things about me, but is it really helping my ministry or walk with God? What about my ego – does it help it any? The truth can be great, but delivered wrong? What happens then? Our Bible study last night at the church addressed that question kind of about the church. What is our church saying to the lost – to the atheist – to the mother of 4 that isn’t married and only in her early 20’s – to the poor person that can’t afford clothing – or maybe even the person who lies? I’m sure you get my point. Eventually Paul recognized her as a major hindrance and took decisive action. The truth, coming through the wrong source or delivered inappropriately, can loss its effectiveness. Pray and share the good news about Christ – through your words, prayer, life, etc. You never know how many chances you’ll get to with that lost person, that mother of 4, that person ______________ ….You get to fill in that blank, because we all know someone who can fit there. God Bless and Love, Pastor Jerry
What are we chasing? Luke 7:31-32 (NIV) 31 "To what, then, can I compare the people of this generation? What are they like? 32 They are like children sitting in the marketplace and calling out to each other: "'We played the flute for you, and you did not dance; we sang a dirge, and you did not cry.' In these verses today we find something that might catch some of us off guard. I find myself in this generation that Christ is talking about. Well actually I believe in my heart this verse could be talking about the generation before me and the generation before that and so on…and the generation to come. It’s easy for us to find ourselves looking – searching if you will – for something. What is the next high of excitement – the next thing that will catch our eye? Life is so full of exciting things we like to and want to take them all in, but what happens if we can’t or won’t? Nothing…life simply goes on without us being a part of it anymore. Recently I’ve thought about this thing they call a bucket list. If you only live once you need to put this on your bucket list – well actually you do only live once. We all do. What could we possibly put on a list that could and would stay with us forever? But God didn’t create us that way. We are meant to forget the bad things, but learn from them. We are meant to weep, but now drown in sorry. We are meant to get excited about what goes on in the world, but not let it rule over us. Today I find myself maybe doing those things in excess – too much. We come wanting to worship God, but the world tells us we have to make it more exciting every time we do it. The songs have to get better – the preacher has to give more information and more exciting than the last, but it must be done is a shorter amount of time. It’s like church in a microwave. God’s word tells us here the world can do all kinds of things for us to make us happy and well it won’t it can’t. We just weren’t made for this world. The things of this world will never make us happy or content, because God’s word says it won’t. The world expects us to fall at its every whim. Will you fall or will you stand. Just because the world wasn’t better and greater the day before doesn’t mean it’s broken only that today we need to be content with what it is today. We will have days when everything doesn’t go great – but that doesn’t mean it’s all bad. As we think about church or even the people in the church – just because it wasn’t knocked out of the park doesn’t mean it wasn’t meant for someone who thought it was. Church worship wasn’t just meant for us to enjoy and soak up it was actually meant for us to come into worship with Christ our Lord. Maybe that’s it----maybe this world wasn’t meant to be all about us and our present generation. God Bless and Have a great Day!!! Pastor Jerry
What Kind of Faith? Luke 7:6-10 6 So Jesus went with them. He was not far from the house when the centurion sent friends to say to him: "Lord, don't trouble yourself, for I do not deserve to have you come under my roof. 7 That is why I did not even consider myself worthy to come to you. But say the word, and my servant will be healed. 8 For I myself am a man under authority, with soldiers under me. I tell this one, 'Go,' and he goes; and that one, 'Come,' and he comes. I say to my servant, 'Do this,' and he does it." 9 When Jesus heard this, he was amazed at him, and turning to the crowd following him, he said, "I tell you, I have not found such great faith even in Israel." 10 Then the men who had been sent returned to the house and found the servant well. I would like us to consider two different ideas going on here in these verses. The first is humility – for the centurion to send even more men to Christ telling him – don’t bother yourself with even coming into my house. He’s telling him even with everything I have I am not worthy of who you are. The second is this – Faith. How much faith did the centurion have that Christ didn’t even have to come to him – he knew that he had ability to just speak into existence that his servant would be healed. Humility is a strange thing to most of us…why? Because you if say you’re humble you aren’t anymore. I remember watching a video of a service and the pastor saying those exact words. How can a person be humble when you’re telling everyone you are humble? Humility isn’t something expressed verbally it’s an action you’re doing. I can tell you I’m humble, but no one will ever believe you. I can show you I’m humble and I never have to tell anyone. I like it when my wife makes this statement – if you have to tell me you are something you probably aren’t really. So it goes something like this – If you have to tell me you’re acting like an adult you probably aren’t. If you have to tell me you’re a believer in Christ – then you may not be. If you have to tell me you’re humble I’d say you probably aren’t. The point is this – I think it much better to show someone who you are instead of just telling them. Christ tells us to teach others and tell them about him – not about ourselves. As we look at these verses we find a man who truly is humble, not because of what he said, but because of his actions. Humility is difficult for most of us because we find we are selfish. I want it this way or that – my way if you will. Taking self out if it is the quickest way to finding out what Christ needs for us. Faith – I will have faith in something or someone until they prove me wrong, right? Is that the way we work? I have faith in you until I don’t. For this centurion to have such faith in Christ to heal his servant must have been more than most could even comprehend. How much faith would it take for him to make that statement? How much faith would it take today? I see and hear of people being sick and hurting – yet when I pray – speak to Christ just as this centurion did – how many people do I see healed? It helps me to realize just how little faith I have sometimes. I would love just as most of you would the ability to have faith that Christ can and will heal the sick – save people who are lost – repent of their sins – come back to Christ who have become backslidden all because I prayed and had that kind of faith. Faith that if I pray and do not doubt it shall be given to me as the scripture tells us. If I have faith that Christ can save me surely I’d have faith he can do all things. Faith the size of a mustard seed can give us the ability to cast a mountain into the sea, but how many of us can do that? Today I ask for all us to believe as the centurion did – that Christ can speak it and it shall come to pass – not because of what we can do, but because of what he can do if we believe. God Bless and have Blessed Day!!!! Pastor Jerry
